Alternative Justice System Practitioners Strengthened in Kisumu

On the 13th and 14th March 2025, KELIN in partnership with the National Steering Committee on the implementation of Alternative Justice System (NaSCI-AJS),  the Judiciary and Uhai Lake Forum, led a training on the implementation of the AJS Policy and the Kisumu AJS ontological map and County Action Plan (CAP) for 20 AJS practitioners.

The workshop attracted actors from the judiciary, civil society, national government administration and council of elders. The key objectives included building the capacity of AJS Champions on the AJS policy, Kisumu CAP, identifying areas of synergy, creating a well-informed pool of champions, raising awareness on the existing AJS Model in readiness for dissemination of the AJS policy and the developed Information education Communication (IEC) materials.

KELIN’s Programme Officer, Akach Otieno in his opening remarks, emphasized the mantra of justice for all and all for justice highlighting that access to justice is a multi-stakeholder process.

Ms. Jemimah Aluda, Head of Secretariat NaSCI-AJS also remarked that most people go to court to show power rather than seek justice that is cardinal to court. She added that NaSCI-AJS is committed to activate AJS typologies at the counties and urged participants not to remove oxygen from them if social transformation through access to justice is to be realized.

Honourable Vallery Atieno from Kisumu law courts further highlighted the Judiciary ‘s commitment to social transformation through access to justice and urged participants to work as a team to promote the growth of the seed of justice.

Access to justice is a fundamental rule of law, noting its transformative, restorative, and social bond–strengthening impact in society. KELIN remains deeply connected to communities in need, particularly women, children, and orphans who continue to face challenges when demanding equal rights to land and property. By investing in AJS mechanisms that put the people first and can help quickly resolve these disputes such as working with community elders, chiefs, court-user-committees, and the Judiciary, KELIN strives to develop and maintain partnerships to realize proportionate, just, and expeditious justice for all. To further close the justice gap, KELIN will continue to promote social justice through community engagement and capacity-building sessions on AJS, raising public awareness and strengthening access to justice.
