KELIN Engages Limuru Youth Changers As Champions Against Sexual And Gender Based Violence

KELIN’s Tabitha Saoyo taking the participants through the legislative framework on sexual gender based violence in Kenya.

The training was educative and fun as well. We got to learn what the law states when it comes to sexual offences. We also learnt interesting things including that as per the law, children under the age of twelve cannot be deemed to have carnal knowledge!’ Venoranda Rebecca Kuboka, the team leader, Youth Changers Kenya,

On 26 May 2017, KELIN facilitated a one day capacity building training on the legislative framework on sexual and reproductive health rights.  The training, which was organized by Youth Changers Kenya, a grassroots organization situate in Limuru, aimed at equipping the community members with skills and information on how to be champions of Human Rights and to enable them address the various sexual violations in their respective areas. Key among the organizations represented at the meeting was the Ministry of Health, Red Cross Kenya, North Star Alliance, Children’s officers from the area and the community health volunteers

According to Gender Violence Recovery Centre (GVRC) annual reports, Limuru is one of the areas most prevalent to gender based violence with reported cases of rape, incest, sodomy and defilement. The training mainly focused on equipping participants with knowledge on the use of the Police P3 form, the post rape care form and the laws regarding sexual offences. It is noteworthy that participants were cautioned against negotiating sexual offences out of court as this is common practice.

As a result of this meeting, KELIN hopes to forge partnerships with the Limuru based community based organizations and community health volunteers to assist in the reduction of cases of sexual and gender based violence in the area.
