KELIN engaging Elders and Chiefs on sexual and reproductive health and rights

On 17 – 19 July 2017, KELIN will hold a two-day capacity building forum for 38 elders and chiefs from Homa Bay County. The forum is set to host Elders and Chiefs drawn from nine sub counties namely: Homa Bay, Rangwe, Rachuonyo, Kasipul, Kabondo, Mbita, Suba, Takawiri, Mfangano and Ndhiwa.

The training, which is part of the overall KELIN DREAMS Innovation Challenge is set to empower elders and chiefs: on the basic concepts of HIV and sexual and reproductive health rights; increase their understanding on the legal protections available to young women whose sexual and reproductive rights have been violated; and create stronger networking linkages between the elders, chiefs, law enforcement officers and the judiciary in securing justice for victims of sexual violence.

KELIN is building on existing relationships cultivated through its Cultural Structures Project (CSP), which has been implemented under the Women Land and Property Rights thematic area to addresses the unequal treatment of women living with HIV within the cultural setting. KELIN hopes to build on the interaction with Elders and Chiefs within the CSP to strengthen the linkages between adolescent girls and young women and the leaders within their communities in relation to violation of sexual and reproductive rights by underscoring the pathways to justice for victims. To achieve this, the forum intends to establish local Elders’ Committees in each sub county to act as watchdogs and custodians of vulnerable adolescent girls and young women within their respective communities.
