KELIN gives keynote address on advocacy at AMREF’s Annual Technical Meeting

“We need to start thinking in line with what you have taught us today. We have been doing a lot of community advocacy but not enough with the courts and parliament” AMREF staff member

On 6 September 2016, KELIN’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights Programme Manager, Ms. Saoyo Tabitha, gave a keynote address titled “Advocacy for sustainable and equitable health rights” at AMREF’s Annual Technical Meeting. This was the organization’s annual programme review meeting held at AMREF’s Dagoretti Child Development and Training Centre and attended by over 130 staff. The keynote address was in line with this year’s AMREF theme for their meeting “Creating lasting impact in Health through systems strengthening”.

Ms. Saoyo’s address was geared towards discussing alternative avenues of advocacy, in particular, engaging parliamentary and judicial processes as part of AMREF’s broader engagement on health. The address further challenged AMREF to begin exploring alternative avenues of advocacy besides empowering communities through their projects.

With the devolution of health within counties, Ms. Saoyo motivated AMREF to explore mechanisms of engaging in county budgetary, law and policy making processes and building local alliances. Such efforts would ensure sustainable health interventions within the wider context.

KELIN, in its 2015 – 2019 strategic plan,  intends to create partnerships at county, national, regional and global levels for better delivery of our mandate. This meeting served the purposes of achieving this outcome.
