KELIN’s legal support network convenes for a capacity strengthening training to advance sexual and reproductive health rights

KELIN’s legal support network comprising of Advocates of the High Court of Kenya and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights think tanks and advocates have convened for a two-day capacity strengthening training in Malindi.

The two days capacity strengthening training runs from 16th-17th March 2023 and focusses on regional law-making processes and the effect on sexual and reproductive health rights advocacy and litigation in Kenya and at the East Africa Community.

An enabling legal and policy environment is key for the promotion, protection, and fulfilment of sexual and reproductive health rights in Kenya and the East Africa region. Although there have been notable country specific improvements in fostering an enabling environment, sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) at the East Africa Community, remains an area that is beset with several barriers among them misinformation and stigma underpinned by social norms, religious, moral, cultural, and political beliefs. For instance, the enactment of the East Africa Community (EAC) Sexual Reproductive Health (EAC SRHR) Bill was shrouded by contentions hinged on religion, traditional and cultural views that oppose grounds for access to safe abortion, reproductive rights for adolescents, surrogacy, assisted reproduction and In-Vitro fertigation.

Against this background it is expected that by the end of the training, LSN members will have strengthened capacity in regional law-making processes and the effect on SRHR litigation and advocacy. Further it is expected that the LSN members will have nuanced understanding of the EAC SRHR Bill and that they will draw lessons from it as well as the EAC HIV & Aids Prevention and Control audit findings as part of identifying opportunities to advance SRHR.
