Policy and the Law Supporting Healthy Diets for Children

Children in Kenya are increasingly exposed to aggressive marketing of unhealthy foods and sugary drinks. These advertisements often colorful, persuasive, and targeted directly at young audiences shape dietary preferences and contribute to rising rates of childhood obesity, diabetes, and other non-communicable diseases. Recognizing this urgent public health challenge, KELIN is spearheading a campaign to advocate for stronger policy and legal frameworks that protect children from harmful food marketing practices.

The Constitution of Kenya guarantees every child the right to health, nutrition, and protection. Restricting unhealthy food marketing reduces exposure and helps shift consumption patterns toward healthier diets. Legal frameworks hold the industry and advertisers responsible for practices that undermine children’s health.  WHO and UNICEF equally recommend comprehensive restrictions on marketing unhealthy foods to children as a key strategy to combat diet-related diseases.

KELIN has been at the forefront of legal advocacy for health rights in Kenya, working with government agencies, civil society, and communities to advance policies that safeguard public health. Our goal is to promote healthy diets for children in Kenya by restricting the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages to children, ensuring that the law supports children’s right to health and well-being.

Together, we can ensure that Kenya’s laws and policies protect children’s health today and secure a healthier future for generations to come.

Healthy children, strong nation: Let’s make the law work for their diets.
