International Day of Families: A Call for Inclusive Policies

On 15th May 2025, KELIN,together withthe Reproductive Health Champions Organization (RHCO),markedthe International Day of Families in Nakuru, Kenya by holding a vibrant event bringing together civil society actors, community members, and policy advocates to amplify calls for inclusive and rights-based definitions of family in Kenya.

Under the theme “Diverse Families, Equal Rights,” the event served as a platform to challenge increasingly conservative narratives being pushed at both national and continental levels. The activity forms part of an ongoing advocacy campaign to resist anti-rights ideologies.

The day featured the creation of a color-coded diversity map, where participants represented different family types such as single-parent, child-headed, LGBTQ, blended, traditional, street, and grandparent-headed families, each using a unique color to mark their place on the map. This powerful visual symbolized the call for recognition in public policy. The event also included family fun activities like games and team-building sessions designed to build unity, amplify shared demands, and promote collective advocacy. Together, these activities aimed to strengthen engagement, challenge exclusion, and celebrate every family’s rightful place in society.

“Our society is evolving, and so must our laws and policies. Family is not a one-size fits-all concept. We must recognize and protect all forms of family without discrimination or exclusion.” – Martin Lunalo

KELIN remains committed to working with partners to promote the legal recognition of diverse family structures and raise awareness about sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR). This effort supports the realization of the highest attainable standard of health and advocates for policies and legal frameworks that respect and protect all types of families in Kenya, whether nuclear, single-parent, same-sex, blended, or child-headed, as guaranteed under Article 45 of the Constitution.
