YOUNG PEOPLE TAKE THE LEAD IN CHAMPIONING HEALTHIER FOOD ENVIRONMENTS IN KENYA

Nairobi, 26 – 27 October 2026:

From electing own leadership to developing an advocacy strategy, young people are stepping forward to shape Kenya’s food-policy landscape.

The enthusiasm, energy and determination of young people to champion healthier food environments was evident on 26–27 October 2026, when the Healthy Food Alliance Youth Advocacy Secretariat convened for a two-day strategic planning meeting facilitated by KELIN. The journey began in February 2026, when KELIN established the Healthy Food Alliance to strengthen collective advocacy for healthier food environments. Recognizing the importance of meaningful youth participation, KELIN facilitated the formation of a Youth Cohort within the Alliance.

However, the young advocates had a bigger ambition: they wanted more than a seat at the table; they wanted to lead the advocacy agenda! Demonstrating commitment to ownership and leadership, Youth Cohort members elected a Secretariat to coordinate their efforts and advance shared priorities. With the leadership structure established, the Secretariat came together for an engaging two-day meeting to develop a Youth Advocacy Strategy and Action Plan focused on front-of-pack warning labelling (FOPWL) and restrictions on unhealthy-food marketing to children.

Through lively discussions, creative exchanges and collaborative planning, the young advocates identified three strategic pillars: capacity building, digital advocacy and stakeholder engagement, all informed by research and evidence. At the heart of this initiative is a shift from youth participation to youth leadership. With a shared direction and resources identified, the Secretariat is now preparing to translate its strategy into action, working alongside the wider Healthy Food Alliance and Food Policy Coalition.

While young people determine priorities and drive implementation, KELIN provides technical support, mentorship, and opportunities to strengthen their advocacy capacity. KELIN remains committed to nurturing meaningful youth leadership by providing connections to policy processes needed to turn youth-driven priorities into tangible advocacy outcomes. Young people are ready to lead, influence policy and shape a healthier food future for Kenya!
