KELIN joined judges, judicial officers and public health stakeholders at the 2026 Judicial Colloquium and Wellness Summit to discuss Kenya’s growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and the role that law, consumer protection and healthier food environments can play in addressing it. The session was convened jointly with the Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance of Kenya (NCDAK).
The discussion focused on Front-of-Pack Warning Labels (FOPWL) as one of the measures being considered to improve nutrition information for consumers. Participants explored how simple, easy-to-understand warning labels on packaged foods can help people identify products that are high in nutrients of concern, including sugar, salt and saturated fats, and support more informed food choices.
KELIN’s presentation emphasised that creating healthier food environments requires more than individual behaviour change. It highlighted the importance of legal, policy and regulatory measures that make it easier for people to access clear, accurate and understandable nutrition information and make healthier choices.
The session also examined the constitutional and legal framework that underpins these discussions. It highlighted Article 43 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to the highest attainable standard of health, and Article 46, which protects consumers’ right to information, as important foundations for conversations around food labelling and consumer protection.
Judges and participants exchanged perspectives on the Judiciary’s role in interpreting and safeguarding constitutional rights when public health measures come before the courts. The discussions underscored the importance of ensuring that legal and policy measures aimed at improving public health are considered within Kenya’s constitutional framework while balancing the rights and interests involved.
The Wellness Summit provided an important platform for dialogue between the Judiciary, civil society and public health actors on strengthening legal and policy approaches that support healthier diets and protect consumer rights in Kenya.
