Homabay Youth, Gender And Culture Minister pays courtesy call to KELIN

On 29th May 2018, KELIN was honored to host the Homabay County Minister (CEC) of Youth, Gender, Culture, Tourism, Sports and Social Services at our offices. Hon Roselyne Odhiambo has been keen to explore potential collaboration with partners working in the areas of youth, gender and culture.

During the meeting, the CEC indicated that she is aware of the challenges facing young girls and women in her county, particularly the increasing teenage pregnancies, high school dropout rates, HIV infections amongst the youth and dis-inheritance of women upon the death of their spouses. She is therefore keen to put in place mechanisms that can concretely address these challenges. At the end of the meeting it was agreed that a Memorandum of Understanding will enhance the partnership and ensure sustained collaboration, beyond the office bearers of the two institutions.

KELIN expects that this collaboration will result in a change in narrative for Homabay County, in the roll out and implementation programs that address HIV, discriminative cultural practices, school dropout rates, sexual violence, dis-empowered widows among other challenges. It is hoped that the programs will work towards safeguarding the welfare and human rights of adolescent girls, young women and widows in the county.
