KELIN kicks of the Women’s History Month by addressing social norms affecting women’s land and property rights in Homa Bay

KELIN is set to train 50 women and men on securing your family’s future (SYFF) Together curriculum from 6th to 10th March 2023 in Homabay. This knowledge build-up training will equip them with knowledge to influence equitable social and peer norms in the community. The training will also equip the participants with effective and efficient communication skill for gender transformative advocacy and prepare the participants for diverse audiences.

In 2020, KELIN trained 200 women using a curriculum for women. As the training commenced, the women were uncomfortable speaking about land issues stating it was a reserve for the men. This position changed at the end of the training having understood the legal positions supportive of their rights. Similarly, in 2021, 200 men were trained, and they were opposed to registering name of their spouses in title deeds or willing property to them. The position was anchored in a perceived culture that was debunked and more men took action in writing will, jointly registering land with their spouses, and registering their marriages.

SYFF Together Course was developed to curate a shared understanding of the human rights issues impacting women’s rights and spearhead equitable norms in the community. This training will enhance knowledge and messaging, which is based on communication for change to enunciate the impact of culture, biased laws, misconceived norms and lack of awareness as the impediments to women claiming their right to land and property.
