KELIN partners with the office of the Attorney General to facilitate access to property rights for widows and orphans

On 29 March 2018, KELIN hosted various stakeholders including the office of the Attorney General for a one day forum to deliberate on the draft Information Education and Communication (IEC) material on claiming inheritance dues from the Office of the Public Trustee and initiate discussions on the need to create awareness on the processes of property administration.

KELIN has developed this step by step IEC in recognition of the lack of awareness on  issues revolving around inheritance and property administration, which have assumed a prominent place in the current society yet the information is yet to be broken down to facilitate the claiming of these rights. The material captures the basic documentation required to facilitate the process and clearly outlines the mechanisms put in place to prevent defrauding of the right holders.

Stakeholders contributed towards the content and shared their experiences based on their interactions with the public trustee’s office and recognized that there is need to break down information on the requisite processes followed to secure property and inheritance rights, especially by the vulnerable widows and orphans.

Ultimately, the community friendly IEC material will be launched during the Judiciary family division open day in September 2018.

In her closing remarks, Concepta Nabutola, the chief state counsel who was the Attorney Generals’ representative noted that ;”It is the responsibility of citizens to approach courts and claim their rights, we look forward to partnering with KELIN to ensure awareness creation is conducted at the grassroots to facilitate access to property rights for the vulnerable and marginalized populations”
