This training is a follow up from the Multi-stakeholder County Dialogue that KELIN previously conducted with the key population community on violence prevention in the context of HIV. Violence against the key population community, particularly sex workers, persons who inject drugs and men who have sex with men is endemic. According to a polling booth survey conducted by NASCOP in 2014, 44% female sex workers, 24% men who have sex with men and 57% of persons who inject drugs reported experiencing violence.
Reported incidences of violence include mob attacks, reluctant police response, arbitrary arrest, and discrimination at health care centers amongst others. On this premise, this workshop will be founded on the role of the community in supporting interventions that are geared towards promoting human rights and access to HIV services for the key populations.
The workshop, which brings together a number of key population groups, seeks to enhance their understanding on the linkages between violence prevention, HIV and human rights; foster support for key population’s access to justice; and strengthen their capacities to respond to cases of violence.
At the end of this forum, KELIN hopes to have empowered key population groups in Mombasa, so as to be able to adequately respond to violence, using the law and constitutionally mandated bodies such as the police and national human rights institutions.
