KELIN set to engage widows from Kisumu County on documentation and reporting of sexual and reproductive health violations

On 19th – 20th September 2017, KELIN will engage 30 widows in a two day training in Kisumu County. The training is focused on addressing the existing sexual and reproductive health violations and developing linkages to assist in the referral of cases to courts. The training is one of the key interventions under the DREAMS project which is committed to achieving a 40% reduction in HIV infection among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW).

The training will bring together widow champions from the sub counties of Seme, Nyando, Kisumu Central, Kisumu East, Kisumu West and Muhoroni and aims to achieve the following objectives:

  1. To introduce participants to the basic concepts of sexual and gender based violence and the linkages between violence against women and HIV;
  2. To empower widows on the documentation of SRHR violations and reporting mechanisms available under the legal justice systems; and
  3. To facilitate the recreation of traditional structures of custodianship between the ‘mothers’ in the society and adolescent girls and young women

As a result of this training, KELIN hopes to empower the 30 widow champions from the county to break barriers and facilitate access to justice and health services for adolescent girls and young women who are vulnerable to HIV and sexual violence.
