KELIN Staff Donate their Time to Provide Legal AID at the 21st International AIDS Conference

Provision of legal advice and access to justice has been noted by UNAIDS as one of the seven key programmes towards reducing stigma and discrimination and increasing access to justice in the HIV response.

Our colleagues Allan Maleche, Saoyo Tabitha Griffith and Timothy Wafula have dedicated at least two hours of their time to provide legal advice to delegates at the 21st International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa. This is as result of the brilliant idea by the AIDS Free World to host a Legal Consultation Center at International AIDS Conference in Durban.

“I had a chance to participate at the center and I gave legal advice to six clients across a period of two hours. The clients sought advice on a number of issues including, denial of employment on the basis of one’s HIV+ status, disinheritance of property, and stigmatizing and derogatory remarks made towards persons living with HIV,” said Allan Maleche, the KELIN Executive Director.

The AIDS Free World has also developed a resource guide that is intended to assist people living with and affected by HIV in accessing organizations that provide legal assistance, guidance and/or other forms of support. If you would like your organization to be included in the guide, please contact info@aidsfreeworld.org.
