KELIN Widow Champions formulate a response team to report and document sexual violations

On 19 – 20 September 2017, KELIN engaged 30 widow champions from the sub counties of Seme, Nyando, Kisumu Central, Kisumu East, Kisumu West and Muhoroni in a two day training on Documentation and reporting of sexual and Reproductive health violations.

The training focused on empowering widows to initiate intergenerational dialogues with the adolescent girls with the aim of opening up communication channels on sexual and reproductive health and rights. These conversations were anchored on the need to encourage the use traditional structures of custodianship between the ‘mothers’ in the society and adolescent girls and young women.

As a result of this training, a sub county level network of widow champions has now been initiated to document possible sexual violations, take initiative to ensure referral and reporting of these cases and ensure justice for adolescent girls and young women

As a human rights champion in Muhoroni sub county with the additional knowledge, I will utilize the existing structures including the police, youth friendly centers and the courts to ensure sexual violation are reported unlike the current situation where such cases are resolved at the household level” Consolata Otieno, Widow champion, Muhoroni sub county
