KELIN’s Legal Support Network hosts discussions at the Reproductive Health Network annual conference

‘This conference could not have come at a better time. The theme speaks towards realities on the ground that we as lawyers are dealing with every day in our cases’ – Jacqueline Waihenya.

On 15 September 2016, KELIN along with our Legal Support Network lawyers (LSN) hosted a panel discussion during this year’s annual Reproductive Health Network (RHN) Conference. The conference was held at the Whitesands Hotel in Mombasa County hosting over 100 mid-level medical providers. The theme of this year’s deliberations was Prioritizing Adolescents and Youths Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights in line with the Kenyan Constitution towards attaining Sustainable Development.

KELIN’s panel discussion addressed three issues: First, the debate on minors and the age of consent in order to receive contraceptives; second, the current legislative framework on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) in Kenya; and lastly, the legal and regulatory requirements for compliance of medical professionals in clinic setups.

In addition to the panel discussions, KELIN also hosted a legal aid clinic at the same venue. The platform gave the participants an opportunity to address any legal questions that they had  regarding sexual and reproductive health rights. Among the issues addressed during the legal aid forum was how medics can formally register their clinics, the laws regulating taxation and pension, as well as the debate on whether professionals need to pay licence fees to the counties.

This conference anchors well with one of KELIN’s 2015 – 2019 strategic plan which aims to create key partnerships at county, national, regional and global levels for better delivery of our mandate.
