Kenya Fourth Top Recipient Countries of Philanthropic HIV & AIDS Funding in 2014.

Washington, D.C 9 December 2015 – A new report by Funders Concerned about AIDS (FCAA) revealed that Kenya was the fourth top recipient country of Philanthropic HIV & AIDS Funding in 2014. The report, which was launched at the Funders Concerned about AIDS Philanthropy Summit 2015, further revealed that Eastern and Southern Africa received $114,000,000 philanthropic support to address HIV & AIDS in 2014, making it the second highest geographical region to receive the funding.

KELIN was represented, for the first time at this summit, by its Executive Director Mr. Allan Maleche. Mr. Maleche was part of a panel that discussed access to justice interventions to address HIV and the need to build an evidence base for it. The panel was organized by the Law and Health Initiative, Public Health Programme of theOpen Society Foundation. Itbrought together academic researchers and human rights advocates working at the country level to:

  1. Discuss a growing body of evidence demonstrating that access to justice and legal empowerment programmes have positive health outcomes.
  2. Explore how to build the evidence base through scientific approaches to implementation.
  3. Recommend how HIV donors can refine human rights related funding approaches based on evidence and good practice.

“I am glad to have been have been a part of this well-organized two day conference. It provided a unique opportunity to interact with funders globally and exchange useful ideas that will help strengthen the fight against HIV & AIDS,”said Mr. Maleche at the end of the two conference.

While KELIN has expanded its mandate in its 2015 – 2019 Strategic Plan to focus on the right to health, HIV & TB remains a key thematic area that will provide an opportunity to keeping building the evidence that indeed access to justice and legal empowerment programmes have positive health outcomes.
