TAKING THE DIGITAL HEALTH COVERSATION TO THE AFRICA COMMISSION ON HUMAN AND PEOPLES RIGHTS (ACHPR)

We are celebrating 20 years since the signing of the Maputo Protocol which aims to protect African women’s rights.

In commemoration of the 20 years, KELIN attended the 77th Session that was hosted in Arusha, Tanzania which was also attended by Non-Governmental Organizations, Civil Society Organizations, International Non-Governmental Organizations and State delegates from Across Africa. Miss Olendo Obondo from KELIN took the center stage as she presented a crucial statement to the commission on the UN Special Rapporteur’s report concerning Digital Technologies, Innovation, and the Right to Health.

The statement explored the impact of digital technologies on health rights and KELIN provided a regional perspective, focusing on the challenges and opportunities that arise in the African context. Issues such as access to healthcare, data privacy, and the ethical use of digital technologies in the health sector were emphasized. A call to action was put forth to the ACHPR to lead in establishing normative frameworks to: Promote Digital Inclusivity, Protect Data Privacy and Security, Monitor and Report and Engage Civil Society in shaping policies.

KELIN’s active involvement in this international forum showcases its commitment to advocating for equitable human and rights-centred approaches to healthcare in the digital age. As the 77th ACHPR session progressedd, the discussions sparked by KELIN’s statement are expected to contribute significantly to the ongoing discourse on the intersection of technology, innovation, and the right to health in the African context.
