KELIN engages Nyeri county nurses on health as a devolved function

On 24th November 2017, KELIN participated in a Continuous Medical Education (CME) forum that was hosted by the National Nurses Association of Kenya, in Nyeri County. This forum was part of the ongoing efforts by the county’s nurses to keep abreast of new developments in the medical field.

Among the topics that were deliberated included updates on patient safety in accordance with World Health Organization guidelines, risk management and the emerging medical products in the market.

During the forum, KELIN’s Deputy Director, Tabitha Saoyo facilitated a session on the role of the county health officials in advancing health as a devolved function. The objective of this session was to build the capacity of the nurses on the constitutional and legal framework on health and its advancement under the devolved system. The session deliberated on the constitutional mandates of counties in realizing the right to health, the role of the counties under the Health Act 2017 as well as the challenges faced in devolving the right to health.

At the end of the forum, KELIN challenged the health care workers to aggressively engage in county bill making processes and stay abreast of new health laws being developed at county level, particularly in order to give technical input when the bills are being tabled. This meeting was a great reflection towards KELIN’s broader strategy in its 2015 – 2019 strategic plan which is to create key partnerships at county, national, regional and global levels for better delivery of our mandate.
