KELIN HOSTS INCEPTION MEETING ON COMMUNITY LED MONITORING FOR ACCOUNTABILITY IN TB

Community-Led Monitoring is an integral part of the STOP TB Partnership Global Plan to End TB, which puts people at the centre of TB prevention and response. It unites countries, communities, and partners to ensure equitable and equal access to comprehensive people-cantered TB services, break down legal and societal barriers to achieving TB outcomes, and fully resource and sustain TB responses while integrating them into health, social protection, and humanitarian systems.

In line with this, KELIN, with support from the STOP TB partnership, conducted an inception meeting on 24th July 2023 in Nairobi, aimed at scaling up the involvement of trained TB affected communities to undertake community-led monitoring for accountability on TB and human rights. The meeting brought together national level stakeholders in the TB response including the National TB Program, Civil Society Organizations, health advocates and TB champions from eight counties to introduce them to One Impact Platform as a tool for Community Led Monitoring. In the meeting, participants discussed how to best adopt and use One Impact Platform for community led monitoring for accountability in the country.

Participants discussed some of the benefits of Community Led Monitoring to include:

  1. Improvement of service availability, accessibility, affordability, and quality, while also enhancing provider competency.
  2. Prevention of stock-outs through improved procurement and supply management.

In conclusion, participants agreed on the prerequisites of having a successful Community-Led Monitoring tools as follows:

  1. It must be led by directly impacted communities, including people living with TB and Key Populations, to maintain local leadership, independence, and community ownership throughout the process.
  2. It must include advocacy activities aimed at generating political will and advancing equity, as it functions as a social accountability tool.

Overall, the inception meeting provided valuable insights into the benefits and importance of Community-Led Monitoring in the TB response, and the use of the One Impact Platform and the TB Human Rights Score Card will play a significant role in enhancing accountability and human rights in the fight against TB.

The upcoming stages will include convening a meeting with stakeholders to determine the crucial matters to be monitored under the One Impact Platform. Following that, we will proceed with training of TB champions from eight (8) counties to undertakeimplement Community Led Monitoring using the One Impact Platform.
