On 16th June 2025, the Kenya Legal and Ethical Issues Network on HIV & AIDS (KELIN) joined community members, primary school children, teachers, local leaders, CSOs and government officials to mark the International Day of the African Child 2025, themed “Planning and budgeting for Children’s rights: Progress since 2010”. The day served as a powerful reminder to uphold and promote the rights of African children, particularly their right to quality education and protection from all forms of abuse and neglect.
The celebration included collaboration with local community musicians capturing the attention of residents and serving as a powerful platform for raising awareness and community engagement, highlighting a shared commitment to the well-being of children.
The Chief Officer from the Department of Gender, Sports, and Social Services, Mr. Fredrick Nguma, who served as the Guest of Honour, emphasized the importance of enforcing laws that protect children. He reaffirmed the county’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with schools and community-based organizations to advance child welfare initiatives.
Ms. Elsie Milimu, Program Officer at KELIN, outlined the significance of this commemoration, emphasizing the various initiatives that KELIN has successfully implemented in Kilifi County that promote the rights of children. Specifically, through its Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and HIV programs, KELIN has been actively advocating for children’s rights, working to protect them from abuse and ensure their access to essential health services. Ms. Milimu also expressed appreciation to the county government for its ongoing collaboration with civil society organizations and for providing a platform that enables KELIN to engage with local communities in Kilifi.
KELIN remains committed to working with partners to raise awareness about sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) issues that affect our community and society at large, thus ensuring that no girl child is left behind.
